The future of train transportation will be dictated by the price and availability of oil, the determination of governments to find alternate modes of travel and the public demand for economical, fast transportation. For example, Europe's high passenger rail traffic was driven in part by historical precedent and the price of petrol. It has improved with advancements of high-speed trains and dedicated passenger railway lines.

Since the conception of rail into Australia, (Victoria), in 1854 it has been under the control and supervision of a Commissioner who was answerable to the perspective State Government. The Commissioner was one who had worked his way through the ranks of the railway and had an excellent knowledge of it’s operations.
Both New South Wales and Victoria were originally privately operated systems with New South Wales becoming the first publicly owned railway system in the British Empire.
